There’s nothing more rewarding than being done with work forever. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy many other parts of life—spending time with friends and family, going on long road trips in your RV, and putting more energy into your passions. Although, if you never had time to pick up a hobby while working all those years or are bored of the ones you have, then you may feel a little lost on how to fill your free time. To give you some ideas, here are a few new retirement hobbies you can pick up while traveling on the road.

1. Draw or Paint

Drawing while Traveling

Did you know that creative activities are a great way to wind down and relieve stress? If it’s raining outside of your RV and boredom begins to kick in, then delving into a creative project is a great way to release any tension and bring your creative ideas to life. Plus, when you’re in nature, you can draw many different elements around you, such as rivers and mountains.

2. Read Books

Reading Books in Your RV

Whether you prefer crime, thrillers or romance novels, reading is a great way to keep your mind moving in your post-work life. There’s nothing like relaxing in your RV bed after a long day of hanging out with the grandkids outdoors. Whenever you have a quiet moment on the road, it’s worth getting lost in a good novel.

3. Knit Hats, Sweaters, and More Clothing

Knitting While RVing

Create the best cozy gifts for your family to wear around the campfire by knitting them something special. If you prefer more hands-on hobbies, then learning how to knit is a great hobby to have. Plus, you are able to make something different every time you pull out your knitting needles—a pink hat for your granddaughter, a pair of gloves for your son, or a blanket for yourself.

4. Go On Hikes

Hiking

Whether you are exploring a national park in the desert or are interested in exploring a local trail by the campground you’re staying at, hiking is a must-do hobby when you’re living life on the road. Perhaps you’re looking for easily accessible trails nearby or are planning a day-long adventure in a national park. Either way, hiking is a great way to explore, get some exercise, and connect with family.

5. Go Bird or Whale Watching

Bird and Whale Watching

If you’re a bird lover, then there are many places to go bird watching, such as in Everglades National Park, where you can spot birds like herons. In addition, there are many national parks in Alaska where you can go whale watching, such as in Juneau. If viewing and identifying wildlife is your thing, then you can certainly make it a regular hobby on your road trip.

6. Write

Journaling While Traveling

Similar to drawing and painting, writing is a great way to relieve stress and keep certain memories alive. You can simply keep a journal by your side and jot down any thoughts that come into your mind or write what you did during your RV travels for the day. Schedule some quiet writing time after a long day of adventuring to share stories with others and relax your mind.

7. Ride a Bike

Bike Riding

When you have a bike, you can ride the stunning carriage roads in Acadia National Park or the Moab mountain bike trails in Utah before visiting Arches National Park. You also can just ride around the campground you’re staying at. Biking is a great way to stay active and travel when you want to keep your RV parked at the campground. Enjoy riding solo or with your friends and family!

8. Bake Some Treats

RV Baking

Nothing says bonding with family like baking some sweet treats in the RV kitchen together. Plus, coming up with new dessert recipes is fun, making it a great indoor hobby while on the road. Make everything from homemade muffins to holiday pies. Your family will always be grateful  for whipping them up something good.

Trying to figure out what to do in your down time while RVing as a retired worker is not always easy. Hopefully, this guide gave you some ideas on how to stay busy and enjoy life a little more on the road. Whether you prefer solo activities or ones that help you connect more with your adult kids, there is certainly one or more hobbies in this guide that’ll work for you.

See you on the road!

When hubby retires, I want to collect rocks from everywhere we visit and paint something from that area on the rock. I wish I’d thought of this sooner because I’ve missed out on a bunch of rocks!!! :/
